Middlesbrough consider approach for former Brighton and Newcastle manager

As previously reported on The72 last week, Middlesbrough were considering sacking Head Coach Jonathan Woodgate amidst a string of bad results which has seen them win just one of their last 12 games.

Conflicting reports however stated that Middlesbrough were prepared to stick with Woodgate, and that the hierarchy at the club had taken into account their lengthy injury list.

But according to an exclusive from 90 Min, Boro are monitoring the situation surrounding Chris Hughton, who recently rejected the chance to become Watford Manager.

The report claims that that Woodgate is ‘under pressure’ at The Riverside and that Hughton is high on the Teessider’s wish list if they are to replace the current boss.

However, the former-Newcastle and Brighton and Hove Albion Manager may not be prepared to drop down into the Championship, considering there are offers from the top flight.

Hughton managed two promotions up from the Championship with his two former clubs, recording a 102 points tally with the Magpies during the 2009-10 season, the second highest points total of any club in the history of the second tier.

He finished second and was automatically promoted with Brighton during the 2016-17 season, finishing behind his former side Newcastle.

According to other reports, Middlesbrough are also interested in bringing seasoned veteran Neil Warnock to the club in place of Woodgate. The 71-year old is out of work at the moment following his exit from Cardiff City earlier this season.

Warnock and Hughton would provide vital experience at Boro, and would help them to stay in the division come the end of the season.
